Full Review
At under $25, the Govee RGBIC strip lights are the most accessible way to add bias lighting to your desk without looking like a college dorm setup. The RGBIC technology — addressable LEDs that let different segments glow different colors simultaneously — is what separates these from generic LED strips that can only show one color at a time.
Setup and Installation
Installation takes about ten minutes. The strip has strong 3M-style adhesive backing that grips well to the underside of a desk, behind a monitor, or along a shelf edge. The included controller box is compact enough to tuck out of sight. The Govee Home app pairs quickly over Bluetooth and walks you through the initial setup without friction.
One caveat: if 16.4ft is more than your run requires and you cut the strip, you’ll lose the addressable per-segment behavior in the cut section. Plan your layout before trimming.
App Control and Scenes
The Govee Home app is one of the better smart lighting apps in this price range. You get 64 scene modes, a color picker for custom palettes, a music sync mode that reacts to ambient sound via the built-in mic, and a timer/schedule function. You can also segment the strip manually and assign each section its own color or effect — useful for creating a gradient across your monitor rear.
The main limitation is Bluetooth-only range. You need to be within about 30 feet of the controller, and there’s no remote control or voice assistant integration. If you want Alexa or Google Home support, Govee’s Wi-Fi model (around $35) is the upgrade path.
Desk Lighting Performance
As under-desk ambient lighting or monitor bias lighting, these perform well above their price. The RGBIC glow is smooth and even, and the color accuracy is good enough for bias lighting purposes — not studio-grade, but plenty for reducing eye strain and adding depth to a dark setup. Warm white or soft orange tones work particularly well behind a monitor for long work sessions.
If you already own the Govee RGBIC Floor Lamp, both devices appear in the same Govee Home app and can be grouped for synchronized scenes — a nice bonus for building a cohesive desk lighting setup without switching between apps.
Who Should Buy This
The Govee RGBIC strips are a strong buy if you want app-controlled ambient lighting for under $25 and don’t need voice assistant integration. They’re especially good if you already own other Govee lighting and want unified control. If you need Wi-Fi control or Alexa support, spend the extra $10-15 on Govee’s Wi-Fi RGBIC model instead.
