Full Review

The Ember Mug 2 solves a problem you may not have realized you had: the moment your coffee hits lukewarm and you start microwaving it between meetings. Set a temperature in the app, pour in hot coffee, and it stays exactly there. That’s it. That’s the pitch — and after a week of using one, it’s genuinely hard to go back.

Build Quality and Design

The mug feels substantially heavier than a ceramic cup, which makes sense given the battery and heating element hidden in the base. The matte coating is scratch-resistant and the LED ring at the bottom is subtle enough to disappear on a desk. It looks like a nice mug, not a gadget — which is the right call.

The charging coaster is magnetic and snaps the mug into place. It’s small enough to leave on your desk permanently, and the mug is fully submersible up to one meter for rinsing. You just can’t put it in the dishwasher.

How It Actually Works

Pour in coffee at roughly 150°F and the Ember brings it down to your target temperature — 135°F is the default and probably the right answer for most people. The app stores presets for different drinks (black coffee, latte, tea) and sends a notification when your drink hits temperature. Off the coaster, battery life is around 80 minutes with a full beverage.

On the coaster, it runs indefinitely. This is the real mode. Your mug lives on the coaster, you lift it to drink, you set it back down. The coffee is the same temperature at 11 AM as it was at 8 AM.

The Remote Work Case

This is a work-from-home product more than a travel product. If you’re bouncing between video calls, the mug that stays warm for three hours is quietly transformative. You stop thinking about your coffee and just drink it. The $150 price is steep, but amortized over daily use it’s one of the cheaper desk upgrades per hour of satisfaction.

If you drink a full mug in under 20 minutes and rarely reheat, skip it — you’re paying for a problem you don’t have.

Who Should Buy This

Buy the Ember Mug 2 if you work from home, take long calls, and routinely let coffee go cold while you’re mid-sentence on Zoom. It’s also one of the easiest gifts in this category — recurring demand is strong for a reason. If you mostly drink coffee on the go or finish a cup quickly, a good insulated tumbler will serve you better for a fraction of the price.
